Is There a Universal Spanish Proficiency Test?
As of today, there is no single Spanish proficiency test that is generally recognized and available. This may be due to the large number of controls that would have an interest in testing for Spanish fluency. A particular one that is closest to the equivalent TOEFL is the Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE).
DELE is a certification designed and granted by the Spanish government and follows Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It evaluates the student's ability to read, write, speak and listen to Spanish. The certification examinations are given on a limited basis worldwide, and certification is granted in three (3) basic stages (A1, A2; B1, B2; and C1, C2): elementary language usage, daily language use, and advanced language use. The diploma gives several levels of proficiency that can be evaluated, understood and handled at an international level. DELE test may logistically be difficult to take for many, but the certification is widely recognized. It provides the diploma holder with a generally recognized proof of their skill both in the academic and the world of business. The examination is conducted six times per year, even though you may need to travel in case you are not living close to a major city.
There are other exams similar to the DELE, however, Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) is the most accepted and authorized exam certifying degree of proficiency and mastery of the Spanish language.
Do you want to study abroad and need a proficiency test in Spanish, you may consider Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE).
